Ever the entertainer, the Jamaican kept right on running past the finish for a victory lap that included high-fives with front-row fans, a pause to kneel down and kiss the track and even a somersault. Thousands in the capacity crowd of about 80,000 chanted the champion’s name: “Usain! Usain! Usain!”

Bolt’s training partner and Jamaican teammate, world champion Yohan Blake, won the silver in 9.75, and 2004 Olympic champion Justin Gatlin of the U.S. took the bronze in 9.79.

“It just feels good to be back,” said Gatlin, who served a four-year ban after testing positive for excessive testosterone.

“To be honest, I went out there to challenge a mountain. I went out there to challenge the odds. Not just myself and everything I’ve been through, but the legacy of Usain Bolt,” Gatlin said. “I had to go out there and be fearless.”

Everyone in the final broke 10 seconds except former world-record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica, who pulled up with a groin injury.

At the last Olympics, Bolt announced his arrival on the global stage by winning the 100 with a then-record 9.69 seconds, even though he slowed down to celebrate by pounding his chest over the last 20 meters. That mark only lasted until the 2009 world championships, when he lowered the mark to 9.58.

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae superstar, I-Octane is recuperating in a Kingston-based hospital after falling ill last week.

A member of I-Octane’s team revealed on Monday that the prominent singjay suffered an asthma attack on Thursday night. According to reports, he was taken to hospital where he’s currently being treated by his physician.

Doctors expect I-Octane to make a full recovery from this attack but have advised him to rest until further reassessments are made.

Giver his current health situation, I-Octane will be unable to honor some of his upcoming commitments but hopes to recover as soon as possible so that he can perform for his fans once more.

I-Octane last performed on Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest 2012 in which he gave a typically rousing set. Additionally, he’s released efforts in July such as Bun It & Laugh, Get Weh Mi Want (Mad Panerama Riddim) and Woman Mi Love (Sounique Riddim).

REGGAE fans reacted with disgust yesterday to reports that a newly discovered, blood-sucking parasite had been named after the legendary Bob Marley.

The animal, Gnathia marleyi, is a tiny crustacean with a miniature lobster tail and feeds on fish such as the French grunt on coral reefs in the eastern Caribbean.

The Gnathiids are a common family of parasites found around the world’s oceans, from the Arctic to the tropics.

Bizzarely, the choice of name was intended as a tribute not an insult.

“I named this species, which is truly a natural wonder, after Marley because of my respect and admiration for his music,” Dr Paul Sikkel of Arkansas State University reportedly said in a statement.

“Plus, this species is as uniquely Caribbean as Marley,” said the marine biologist, who discovered the parasite on a field trip four years ago but has only just named it in the journal Zootaxa.

Susan Perkins, in her blog Parasite of the Day, argued that Sikkel had broken the rules for naming the bug and might have to go back and do it again.

However, she noted that Marley is not the first musician to get the dubious honour of having one of the Gnathiid parasites named after him.

In 1971, scientists named a Venezuelan cousin of the marleyi after their favourite classical composer. It’s still known as Gnathia beethoveni.
